Our Program

In January of 2022, Vermilion Parish School System was awarded the Reimagine Innovation Grant to offer an exploratory elective at the middle school level that supports and nurtures our unique way of life in South Louisiana. Offered as a ninth-hour extended-day option, the classes allow any student to participate, including those who are limited by the number of elective choices offered during the “regular” instructional day.

The curriculum specifically targets Louisiana’s rich and diverse culture and incorporates focusing on Cajun and Creole culture. The seven modalities that students explore throughout the course include: music, language, folkart, dance, history, customs, and cuisine.

Folk musicians, artists, culture bearers, consultants, and historians have collaborated for over two years to create the Lâche Pas curriculum.

Currently, Lâche Pas is being offered at three middle schools in Vermilion Parish. Next year (2024-2025), we plan to expand our program to other Vermilion Parish middle schools.

While the Lâche Pas project was created for Vermilion Parish School System, the curriculum will be made available to any school district in Louisiana wishing to offer it.
