Lâche Pas is an experiential elective class that exposes students to the rich world of Louisiana Cajun and Creole music, arts, language, and cultural history through hands-on learning and real-life, local cultural experiences.
2023 marks 102 years since the French Language was prohibited by the Louisiana State Constitution. In 1921, our school systems implemented “English Only” policies which allowed teachers and administrators to punish and publically humiliate any student who was caught speaking French, our State’s heritage language. This single legislative act changed the entire course of History for all who live and have lived in South Louisiana.
The result of this legislation has robbed multiple generations of knowing and experiencing the unique, rich culture that their Cajun and Creole heritage has to offer. Along with the French language, music, dancing, folklore, art, home remedies, and even cooking were all stripped of their meaning and worth – an entire culture, nearly extinct!
Louisiana Heritage Education is working to revive our unique culture within a school framework. Our ultimate goal is to create lifelong Louisiana musicians and artists who possess a profound awareness of and affection for their heritage and its endangered status.
